Well, believe it or not, per the
Award ticketing options/service fees page on UAs site, the redeposit fee applies.Like I said, per the rules. The table at the bottom specifies "Fee to re-credit miles for award travel or a
MileagePlus Upgrade Award" (bolding mine). That seems to me to indicate it is supposed to apply.
I'm not saying I agree it should exist if the upgrade hasn't cleared at the time of cancelation. Perhaps the agent waived the fee without telling you. But per the website, the re-deposit fee is supposed to apply.
