That issue I would say is not so clear / obvious to someone booking an upgrade. The award redeposit fees are almost so strongly associated with *tickets*, that it even came as a surprise to me that mileage upgrades could incur a redeposit fee...

But lesson learned (for others I hope!).

Not if the miles were from TA's account.

Another thing to look out for is that if the upgrade has cleared, you can't cancel it unless the original fare class is available.

Maybe so, but I quoted the language directly from the website in post # 10 which clearly includes redeposit fees for upgrade awards as well. Maybe it is waived much of the time, but buyer should expect it not to be - ignorance isn't an excuse.

True...wasn't looking at the status as a 1k, yeah, wouldn't have a fee.

Does anyone know if United still charges a fee for canceling an upgrade award and redepositing? The link in post #9 doesn't list this category, but the T&C when I go to do the upgrade says:

"To cancel or change your MileagePlus Upgrade Award, or if you cancel or change your flight, you also need to call the United Customer Contact Center, as the MileagePlus Upgrade Award will not be automatically canceled or changed. Award redeposit fees may be applicable."
