American Air pilot uniforms, ID badges lost: report
NEW YORK, Sept 13 (Reuters) - American Airlines (NYSE:AMR - news) sent out an internal memo two weeks ago warning its employees to be vigilant about impostors after one of its crews had uniforms and ID badges stolen in Italy, Fox News reported.

Fox News reported on its Web site that the uniforms and identification were stolen when the crew's Rome hotel room was broken into a few months ago.

Federal law enforcement sources told Fox that they are looking at the incident with ``renewed focus'' to determine whether it is connected with the hijacked planes involved in Tuesday's deadly attacks on New York and outside Washington.

An airline spokesman told Reuters he could not comment on the report because the carrier is cooperating with the FBI and any information could affect investigations.

German police said they have detained an airport worker after searching a Hamburg apartment where two pilots suspected in the New York and Washington terrorist attacks lived.

Police Wednesday night searched a flat in the Harburg section of the northern German city where Mohammed Atta, 33, and Marwan Alshehhi, 23, had lived. Both are suspected pilots in the attacks where hijacked planes were crashed into the World Trade Center towers and Pentagon. A fourth plane went down before hitting its target.

"The (detained) man was in one of the searched apartments that was used by the two suspects," said Gerhard Mueller, head of the state's police. Officials would release no further details about the man or where he worked though they said they were initially looking for a Moroccan.

Both Alshehhi and Atta had been enrolled at the Hamburg technical university and were legally in the country, police said.

US authorities have identified a team of as many as 50 people responsible for supporting or carrying out the deadly attacks against the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, according to a published report.

Meanwhile, New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani reported that 3,700 are missing in the rubble of where the city's tallest buildings once stood.

Added to the deaths in Washington and Pennsylvania when commandeered airliners crashed into the Pentagon and a grassy field southeast of Pittsburgh, the total loss of life is now at about 4,000.

That compares with the 2,390 Americans who died at Pearl Harbor nearly 60 years ago.

The New York Times reported that three financial companies with offices in the complex said more than 1,500 workers were unaccounted for.

The Los Angeles Times reported in its online edition late Thursday that the FBI hit pay dirt in the hours after the Tuesday morning attack, discovering suicide notes and credit-card bills in raids up and down the East Coast.

The information led investigators to identify a team of 50 attackers, 10 of whom are still at large, the report said, citing a source familiar with the investigation. The other 40 men either died in the attacks or were otherwise accounted for.

The suspected terrorists all carried Middle Eastern passports and belonged to four independent cells, the paper said, citing law enforcement and intelligence officials. The authorities also believe that 27 of the suspected terrorists received various kinds of pilot training, which could explain how they were able to direct hijacked planes towards the Pentagon and the World Trade Center.

The nation's airports were closed for a third day on Thursday, partly to prevent the suspected terrorists from fleeing the country, it said. Flights are allowed to reposition planes and to return stranded passengers, but only under stricter guidelines now in place. See full story.

U.S. officials believe the suspected terrorists are linked to Saudi multimillionaire Osama bin Laden, who has reportedly denied involvement in the attacks from his home base of Afghanistan.

A Florida congressman who flew with President Bush on Air Force One after the attacks said he was told that the White House was "95 percent confident" bin Laden was to blame, Reuters reported.

Investigators have been focusing their efforts in the last few days in East Coast states that range from Maine to Florida. On Wednesday, police took people into custody in Boston and south Florida, but no arrests were made, authorities said.

The attacks represented the most serious terrorist attacks against the U.S. in history.

By Wednesday afternoon, the investigation had centered in Boston and neighboring communities as well as such Florida towns as Vero Beach, Venice, Daytona Beach and Coral Springs, according to media reports.

Authorities were also gathering evidence in Providence, R.I., and Portland, Maine, as the process moved quickly across the Eastern Seaboard.

No arrests have been made so far, officials said at a Justice Dept. hearing.

It wasn't clear whether the people who had been apprehended were suspects or merely being asked to assist in the process of gathering evidence. Two of the hijacked flights on Monday originated from Boston.

Thousands of onlookers swarmed in front of the Westin Hotel at Copley Square in Boston, turning the scene into chaos.

FBI agents stormed the hotel to search for clues and dozens of local motorcycle police officers assisted them.

The city downtown, south of 14th St still remains closed today, but the mayor has just stated they will try to get things opened up at least down to Canal St by tomorrow morning.

The Javits Ctr will be used as a staging area for volunteers.

The primary election will be rescheduled for the 25th.

The United States said this morning it had allowed U.S. national airspace reopened to commercial and private aviation effective at 11 a.m. EDT .

Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta said in a statement that U.S. airports will be reopened and flights resumed on a case-by-case basis, only after they implement more stringent levels of security imposed following Tuesday's attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

"I must caution everyone that a system as diverse and complex as ours cannot be brought back up instantly," Mineta said in the statement distributed by the White House.

"We will reopen airports and resume flights on a case-by-case basis, only after they implement our more stringent levels of security," he added. "This phased approach will assure the highest levels of safety, which remains our primary goal."

Mineta said anyone planning to fly should check with their airline on the level of service and flight schedules and should allow plenty of time to deal with new security procedures.

On Wednesday the US government had cleared airlines for limited service and imposed tougher security requirements for airports and airlines, including bans on knives and curbside check-ins.

Talk about it, counselors advise

New York City schools worked feverishly Tuesday morning to evacuate students from the downtown area to safe locations in the north end of the city following an apparent air attack on the twin towers of the World Trade Center.

"All children have been moved out of danger, and only their parents are being allowed to pick them up," New York City Board of Education representative Catie Marshall said in a phone interview.

That was exactly the right move to make, says psychologist and trauma specialist Dr. Patty White.

"The first thing we try to do is to stabilize the kids by taking them away from stimulus," she says.

Some of the alleged perpetrators have reportedly been in the US for over a year now and other additional highjackings may well have been averted also!
