I also want to send a big thanks to ozstamps for the heads-up on *A NZ-AU awards. It's really a great deal. All my regular travel buddies are busy and I was going to let the deal go until I read the post and found I could finally get to Perth for as little as 20K miles. This will be my 5th trip to NZ and AU and I have always skipped Perth because of the distance and other priorities.

Yes, a SYD-Perth fare is not cheap due to the great distance involved, and to get that round trip for 20K starting in AKL is the best deal on the whole Star Alliance chart if you ask me.
I sent my parents on this award as a Wedding Anniversary gift last month which is how I knew. They live in Adelaide (middle of country) and I needed to pay to fly them to MEL to take Air NZ, (for 40K each biz - same number of miles as Perth takes) yet had they lived in Perth the entire trip would have been free.
Weird. But lock it in if you can. I think Air NZ run 767s on that leg and you can bet they are pretty empty, as Perth is not a large population city, so you should have a ton of room to spread out.
I also saw a couple 5 Star AKL hotel today from $NZ99 which
INCLUDES the GST tax .... which is a VERY cheapo deal for those going.
Lower than you'd get anything decent for in the USA on priceline, when their fee and taxes are added. Stamford Plaza Auckland and Sheraton AKL - on:

The Sheraton is bookable a month out, so is not exactly "lastminute" if you need to plan ahead.
