You don't list your flight, but if a hub - even though you were the only ones on the flights departing the hub at booking, a connecting (in this case EXP) pax booking after you has the window for ALL their segments open at T-100 for their first flight, as stated above.
It's a flight out of CLT, so that would explain connecting traffic, even though it's a 9am departure. However, my understanding is the system now only releases complimentary (non-SWU/mileage copay) upgrades once each leg's window opens, not at the window of the first flight on an itinerary with connections. Given the various experiences here, it seems it is one thing in theory and another in practice then.
It's really not the end of the world, just trying to figure out if there is anything consistent about the process to rely on. Then again it is AA and you still can't count on a consistent PDB (on LAA flights anyway)...
