The second mistake was DL's. DL should not have accepted be bags beyond LAX. OP would have had to reclaim them at LAX and check them in with AA.
AA and DL'S baggage interline lasts till Sept 2016. The ticketing interline is what ended back in Sept 15. Till Sept 16 passengers should be allowed to interline baggage. The problem is not all agents know this.
