Each department store chain used to have one day a week (not Sunday) when stores were closed. According to an article I've read department stores closed 19.6 days a year on average in 1996. By 2014 this was reduced to just 1.5 days a year! There is now a trend to increase the number of closed days by certain department stores to 3-5 days a year. But some department stores are open 365 days a year including the New Year's Day.
