I agree with you, having got to Gold a mixture of the hard way (countless internal US and EU economy flights, occasional TATL and TPAC economy), mainly the middle way (WTP TATL) and the easy way (TATL/TPAC in J on business). Flying J is still something a little special - although I can see a proper tier point run on the horizon with FT help

Currently looking at NY for two in March or September £350pp Y £900pp W - £350 is really very cheap, and an extra £1100 of my own money is significant - and an upgradeable W fare a lot more...
