You take the U seat with your miles inviting a friend to go. The friend can't go and you refund the U space much closer to the travel date.
If you have a real friend who had planned to go, but had to cancel but had to cancel, how can it be tampering? If the booking was done with the intent of never using it, that would be a dishonest thing to do
