How is this any different than an OpUp to FC or J when Y is oversold? Are you telling us that while DL will still give OpUps on TATL/TPAC routes to J, DL will fly C+ seats empty rather than give them to a Y pax who is awaiting a seat assignment and IDB those Y pax? I find that hard to believe.
I think right now it happens at times where someone is moved to C+ who didn't pay for it on flights that still have empty seats in the back of Y. I've seen it where I had an empty seat, been upgraded and my old seat is filled with a couple, but there are plenty of seats open in Y. I only notice because I'll take a walk in the cabin sometimes to stretch my legs.
I think the other reason is that DL can now charge a fixed rate for these seats that will be a much larger buy-up from a V fare than a K fare. That makes sense.
