A tried switching to a different flight to NRT a few weeks ago that had a lot of C inventory, but the ticket price change made it prohibitive.
So I guess the difference in the last minute fare price would often be the deal breaker? Because sometimes this can work, for example, you can fly ORD-PEK direct today for $560 roundtrip, on today's flight, return direct on Thu. I know, crazy, and probably unusual.
