This is from the Terms & Conditions for the Amex card on the selection website:

"CARD EXPIRES ON THE DATE PRINTED ON THE FRONT OF THE CARD."

Capitalization is theirs. Maybe they can get away with that because they call it a "Reward Card" instead of a "Gift Card?"
Or maybe that card expires, but you can get a new (renewed) one to replace it.

Or, in any case, you can buy a Delta gift card with the balance just before it expires.
