Offering this on a temporary basis would be more detrimental to customer satisfaction than not having it at all, especially if it is not communicated to people each time that it is only being offered for a short period...
I think the intent may have been to temporarily enable FAs to make this gesture proactively as an impromptu act of goodwill. Maybe we shouldn't be asking for it...
