I doubt it has anything to do with motives beyond that. If anything, round-trip pricing made it easier to hide the lowest fares.
We must be talking about two different things. I just visited DL and AA and both offer a total price when searching for a R/T ticket. The new UA site shows pricing for each segment, requiring you to select the flights before you see a total with tax. Additionally as an above poster said, the one way pricing UA is showing is not true either, because it can't actually purchased at that price with out a return segment. The whole site is just one to many steps, and makes it hard to do business with UA.
