When you say "picture card" I assume you mean the new holographic cards? My strategy is to wait for the pilot to come out of the cockpit during the boarding process. I have a 767 or 757 card ready and offer to trade for the current aircraft.
If a pilot does not come out I will sometimes give the card to a FA and ask the FA to ask the pilots for a trade.
I also tell them "we" are working on a complete set. They may assume "we" means me and my child or grandchild.
Never been asked to show an ID (too prove I am young enough).
