Not from US's perspective they didn't, not as part of a joint venture. AA gets the same revenue whether you fly US/AA metal DCA-PHL-FRA as BA metal IAD-LHR-FRA. pmUS got little or no revenue if you flew UA metal (even as a US codeshare -- not sure how that works or if pmUS even offered codeshares on UA or LH metal trans-Atlantic) IAD-LHR.
Yes, pmUS loyalists could earn FF miles and get status benefits out of IAD, but US offered (offers) DCA-PHL-Europe connections to try to get the revenue. Much less necessary now.
