I'm on a 5 hour layover at IAD. I'm a 1K flying on an economy fare international flight that had cleared upgrade to BF a few weeks ago. When I got to the regular United lounge, the woman checking me in said that it was my lucky day and I had been selected as a "surprise and delight" promotion taking place to use the GF lounge. I asked her "um.....why" and she said that they were doing this today for very loyal united customers. I was both surprised (given that I usually make 1K by the skin of my teeth-both mileage and $$ wise) and delighted.

Oddly though, it doesn't seem to be much of a promotion, as there are no more than a handful of people here and if I had to guess, I would assume that the rest of them are actually in possession of a first class ticket.

I'd be REALLY surprised and extra delighted if I scored the double upgrade. A girl can dream!

Anyone else ever have this happen?
