There are lots of high end SPG hotels where Plat's can get upgraded to very expensive suites. Such as my recent 5 night stay at the St. Regis NYC for 24K points per night in a suite that goes for over $1700 on a corporate rate. Plus over $100 per day Platinum breakfast.
But as a platinum, I wonder you could stay the same room with breakfast with far less than $1,700
Or do you mean you compare point redemption with a room before upgrade? For me I usually spend points for 3-4 cent / point property and that enough to justify holding SPG card.
