If MH's LHR-KUL flight subsequently opens up for award travel, the OP can switch to that flight and get a refund of the hefty surcharges assessed on the long-haul BA flight.
From my research so far ($500 induced), MH also has a significant fuel surcharge, but would be a saving c.f. BA...thanks for the advice.
Since the BA flight is after 8pm, I was thinking of ridding the UK Air Passenger Duty by taking a short, low-cost carrier flight from LBA to anywhere outside the UK and just connect via LHR.
The fact that MH might have a surcharge component on its
cash tickets is irrelevant. AA does not collect surcharges for award travel on MH -- or on any partner other than BA/IB.
