I used to fly SJC-LAX-SNA on a flight with the same flight number.
It cost $5 more than the nonstop. I don't remember if I was trying to get EQS or EQMs, or maybe just the 1000 RDMs... One time we lost the plane to another flight at LAX because the original aircraft for that flight went MX, and the 5 passengers for SNA were taken by van.
