Pretty sure it was always FLL. It certainly was when I flew the route in 1997.
I definitely flew JNB-CPT-MIA in Feb 1997. The route took just over 18 hours but it was a lovely long, uninterrupted nights sleep. I much preferred that flight to the middle of the night wake up call at SID en route to JFK.
