Call ME old-fashioned, but if I was a hotel GM and I got a random e-mail from a future guest asking for an upgrade, I would delegate the request to my rooms controller with the instructions to check their MR status and, if appropriate, give them a one-category upgrade.
If I got a cold call from a future guest asking for an upgrade, and the person on the other end of the phone sounded pleasant, polite, and courteous, I would give them a great upgrade on the spot.
I just don't understand all the lengths people will go to in order to send an impersonal e-mail. Pick up the damn phone and speak to the person on the other end. Establish an actual connection, THEN ask for special treatment.
