Would this not show until after the flight? Can the gate agent make sure this they are synced? any help advice or help would be great as I am very new to this!

Open your reservation on the UA website. Then click the link to view the receipt. As long as there is a $$ amount for the base fare, you can multiply that by 5X as a general member (or whatever multiplier you would use based on your status) to calculate your award miles. Sometimes, UA's website does not display this automatically (I have a reservation that is not automatically calculating).
If this reservation was booked via an agency, there is always the chance that you were sold a bulk fare (the base fare would display as $0.00 or would be an empty field). In this case, your ticket will not accrue award miles or PQD's, though you will accrue PQM's.
