I was in a large group in DR so didn't avail of any options to seek out some alternative sights so my experience doesn't have to be replicated! It's a personal preference so hopefully you can tailor something to your liking. I also come from a borderline subarctic climate so hot and humid is not my cup of tea either. I should try to be more positive but just adding another point of view for you!
