You are correct -- that's an Asian thing. Most 'Muricans wear their shoes everywhere. I even knew someone in college who wore their shoes to bed, even when sober. His shoes stunk something awful. I guess it depends where you stay, but I've stayed at a few hotels where my feet/socks were absolutely black after walking around the hotel room. There definitely seems to be a strong correlation between $ spent and cleanliness of the room. Not always, but more often than not. It's been a long time, but I remember staying someplace that had carpeting in the bathroom! Yuck! I immediately put towels down on the floor there.
On that point, I used to wonder why people had shoe racks in their closets, and figured they must be carrying them to and from the front door. It never even occurred to me that they'd wear their shoes indoors and then take them off/put them on in the closet!
