I completely agree with you, I've seen some egregiously oversize luggage be brought onboard... IMO though, quantity is the larger issue. On an increasing amount of flights I've seen FAs bring suitcases from the back to be stored in the J lockers, a trend inevitably to be exacerbated by the introduction of Light fares.

I feel for you on your TLL-HEL(L), had a similar experience on an ATR operated OUL-HEL last year, a woman brought a huge backpack onboard which she wouldn't fit in the overhead, and refused to give to the FA to be stored in the back. Thankfully, row 18 in front of me was empty so I could move but would have been a very uncomfortable flight should it have been full.
