There is a contract lounge that's quite decent if you have a Diners Club card, I believe Priority Pass as well. I forget the name of it off the top of my head, but using Diners Club lounge finder will point it out. Other than that, it sounds like AA would be your only other option.

United's Website, If you have the Star Alliance Gold logo on your boarding pass, you can access the United Club with a same day boarding pass. I take this to mean that he could present his Air Canada YYZ-DFW and get in provided the Star Alliance Gold logo is on the pass, despite the fact that it is not a departing flight.
