I'm really tempted to do the second thing because it's worth it to me to have more time in SF with my friends and I'm actually terrified of flying and the fewer planes I have to be on, the better. However, I'm nervous that skipping the AA flight altogether will result in some kind of exorbitant penalty fee or a problem with my return flight, which is also AA.
Can any experienced travelers guide me in the right direction? Thanks!
You actually only have ONE choice, and that is #1.
How did you book your ticket? Google doesn't issue tickets.
The $600 fee sounds like a total cancellation as you have not started your journey and decided to make the change. If you can put down your fare basis, I can look up the fare for you and see what the real change fees are. Its usually around $250. Whether you depart from LA or SF, it should be the same as its common-rated which means its the same fare.
It would have been simpler had you booked everything through a travel agent and you'd be able to check what your itinerary is. Booking everything is fine but you tend to carelessly overlook things.
