There is also the JCB Marukai card, it has 1.1% transaction fee but up to 3% cash back and it is a Union Pay card so it should have absolutely no issues in China at all. Only available to residents in select states though.
Are there any other Union Pay cards (preferably with no FTF) available in the US?
It sounds like you have not personally tried using a Discover card in Japan and/or China. I assure you even if the cashier tries it, it will not work at all merchants. Discover's transition to EMV cards makes it worse, as it appears to be a 100% failure rate in China right now.
Also, I've never seen anyone claim that you can use JCB cards at UnionPay merchants. Can anyone verify this? Just because you can use JCB cards at Discover merchants and UnionPay cards at Discover merchants, does not mean you can use a JCB-only card at a UnionPay merchant.
