Solely for purposes using the companion certificate, that would seem to be true. However, it could also mean elite members booking US flights expecting free upgrades for the member and a companion must then pay for 500-mile segment upgrades for both people (which could be quite expensive on a long trip, potentially doubling the fare). If they plan to convert US flights to AA once already booked, how much notice must they give the passengers?
