I'm skeptical that there's any basis in reality for Leeham's "market intelligence" that says Boeing was unable to build several additional 787-8s in 2016 instead of several 787-9s. Maybe Scott Hamilton's rumours are correct, but I doubt it.
That said, if AA is ordering more of the small 787-8s, that's sad news. It's a higher-CASM airplane than the 787-9, and AA doesn't need any more headwinds on costs.
Did American specify why they wanted more 788s and fewer 789s? The 788 and 789 both have the same number of J seats.
