American Airlines has ordered 16 Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. Deliveries were delayed by aircraft design and assembly issues, but began to be delivered in 2015. 16 788s are on order (plus 26 787-9s and options for more). Seating configuration is 28 Business Class, 48 Main Cabin Extra and 150 Main Cabin. Typical range would be JFK and HKG or JNB.
With a typical capacity of 242 passengers and a range of 7,355 nautical miles (13,621 km), the -8 is the base model of the 787 family and was the first to enter service in 2011.[257] With a length of 186 feet (57 m) and a wingspan of 197 feet (60 m), it is the third Boeing widebody after the 747SP and the 777-200LR wider than its length. The 787-8 is targeted to replace the Boeing 767-200ER and -300ER, as well as expand into new non-stop markets where larger planes would not be economically viable. Link to full Wikipedia article

The 5 being delayed is being reported due to AA wanting to swap some out some -9s for more -8s and that's when Boeing could build them.

America said weak traffic demand prompted its deferrals of five 787s. The deferrals were just a little bit to the right, not much: four to 2017 and one to 2018. Our Market Intelligence is much more basic: AA wanted to swap 787-9s to the smaller 787-8s (market demand), which is allowed in the contract. Boeing couldn’t accommodate on the timetable AA wanted, hence the new schedule, according to our information. Plain and simple.
I'm skeptical that there's any basis in reality for Leeham's "market intelligence" that says Boeing was unable to build several additional 787-8s in 2016 instead of several 787-9s. Maybe Scott Hamilton's rumours are correct, but I doubt it.
That said, if AA is ordering more of the small 787-8s, that's sad news. It's a higher-CASM airplane than the 787-9, and AA doesn't need any more headwinds on costs.

I'm pretty impressed with AA's 787 cabin design. It's not as innovative as some of the foreign carriers, but compared to say UA who just jammed their old J seats into the new plane, it looks like AA has taken advantage of some of the differentiating features of the 787, especially the large 2L opening.

Looking at the pic from http://aviationblog.dallasnews.com/2...eing-787.html/ , it shows the last F row as having forward facing middle seats. I think this is the last row of the forward cabin.
Does this mean that the seatmaps are incorrect? They have the last row forward cabin middle seats facing the rear.

Right now, the 772 flying ORD-PEK overnights in PEK as it arrives at around 8, leaving American to pay expensive remain overnight fees (RON). The reason why they waited years to start DFW-PEK was a combination of the now defunct pilot contract and bad slot times at PEK. American finally received excellent slot times at PEK for DFW-PEK to start next week. When American does receive an afternoon landing early evening takeoff slot for ORD-PEK, as they do with DFW-PEK, the schedule will change and the 788 will likely end up being used on this route as American has indicated the 788s will be used primarily on ORD/DFW-Asia for time being.
