If picking up tickets booked via JR ekinetto, the OP would do so from the ticket machines or ticket office (midori no madoguchi), not the JR Travel Center for tourists, right? However, whether it's even possible to pick up tickets without the card used to purchase the tickets, I'm not sure. Perhaps the OP's friends had thought of a way to make this work.
It strikes me as altogether unnecessary, since the trains won't be full that day.
