I use GE all the time at ORD. They don't have any dedicated GE lanes to customs and the customs people often demand your passport, despite having the photo receipt.
Was that at immigration or on exit (customs)? I usually enter the US at ORD multiple times a year and rarely have anyone ask for passport immediately after leaving the kiosk. Showing the receipt usually works. I have been asked to show my passport on exit with baggage (maybe as much as 50% of the time).
