However then you will attain Gold again which will be valid till the end of the calendar year, then two years plus the bonus three months - so valid till 31st Match 2018!!!

Jon - you were absolutely right here. Etihad confirmed to me via email exactly what you said. I think the point I was missing was that status matched Gold status just get that year and 1 year rather than 2 additional years.
Also - per their email it seems they have a soft landing. I will drop to Silver on April 1 and will be back to Gold once I complete my 50K tier miles in May. That will be an earned Gold and will last until March 31, 2018!
I'm actually happy with this as retaining a tier is only for 1 year while earning it again gives me 2+ years.
