I visited the Virgin lounge in HKG about a year ago when I was flying EVA to Taipei. EVA had already joined the Star Alliance but they were still using the Virgin lounge.

Decent decor, semi-open area as mentioned, and staff that wait on you for drinks and some of the food (you are given a menu which you can order off of, if you choose).

It wasn't crowded when I was there but if it was, I could imagine getting a waitperson's attention might be difficult.

You can also sit at the bar and order from there.
