You can read the terms - and coverage limits - under the Montreal Convention from the IATA
here
If your baggage claim.is subject to the Warsaw Convention, your claim could be for:
2. 17 Special Drawing Rights (approximately EUR 20; US $20) per kg for loss of or damage or delay to checked baggage, and 332 Special Drawing Rights (approximately EUR 400; US $400) for unchecked baggage.
I imagine to recover more, you would have had to declare excess value on checking in and paid for supplemental coverage.
Perhaps you already have some coverage under a commercial, umbrella or homeowners or renters insurance?

Yes; this is the way it ought to be done.
I'd guess the OP was carrying undeclared commercial goods to boot, which could negate the claim anyway.
