Glad it isn't just me, although I don't know that I would go as far as awful. I had a one night stay recently. Room was tired and the bathroom was cramped. People talk about small rooms in NYC...this was smaller.
Lounge, though, is nice.
I will always pick the Ren over the FS Marriott. Personally, I think the Ren is in a much better location, particularly if you're driving. Getting in and out of there onto Wacker is generally less hectic, although it can be tricky if you want to head north on State and it's rush hour.
