I am planning on bringing my bike back to the US through SYD-HKG-JFK.
I got a Evoc bike bag for the trip - total dimension 135 x 80 x 38 cm, which is 253 cm, 50 cm over the limit.

I called Cathay Pacific to register my sporting equipment.
Because it is "oversize" they said it is going to cost me 4x the cost of $190 (zone 3 to zone 5) -- a whopping $760 -- regardless of it being one of my free checkin luggages (I get 3 due to emerald status).
It is super hard to believe that people with bike bags are consistently paying this kind of fee to ship their bikes.
What gives? Am I missing something in communicating it is a bike bag?? Or am I screwed?
