Two stabbed in mid-air drama

Two flight attendants were stabbed in the face when a man tried to force his way into the cockpit of a Qantas flight from Melbourne to Launceston this afternoon, emergency services said.

A Melbourne ambulance official said that the two - a man in his late 30s and a woman aged in her 20s - had sustained facial injuries had sustained facial injuries from a sharp wooden implement.

They have since been taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital where they are in a stable condition, Metropolitan Ambulance spokesman James Howe said.

Two passengers were also reported to have sustained minor lacerations and were treated on the scene by paramedics.

The suspected hijack attempt took place onboard Qantas Flight 1737, shortly after it left Melbourne at 2.50pm this afternoon. The plane returned to Tullamarine Airport shortly after take off.

Australian Federal Police said a man was arrested shortly after the flight returned to Melbourne.

"We believe a male passenger was attempting to enter the cockpit and was subdued by flight attendants and passengers," a spokeswoman said.

"The flight had not long left Melbourne."
