Should I be able to request compensation for this delay if that was my only option? Does it change anything that I was previously scheduled to transit through the EU but now am only transiting through West Africa? All I asked for when I was rerouted was comped EC for the 11 hour flight to JFK, but was told he couldn't and that it'd be $115.
You can try filing for EU 261 compensation against AF for canceling your flight (or failing to reschedule you within 5 hours of your original flight), but so far nobody seems to know if this situation warrants compensation or if it's "exceptional".
