I recently completed a multi-night, paid, mid-week stay at the Gaylord Texan. Firstly, it's located in Grapevine, which is only a quick 10-15 min drive from DFW, but about a ~ 30-35 min drive to downtown Dallas. It's also adjacent to the Grapevine Convention Center.
This was my first time staying at any Gaylord property. First impressions were that is was very big and that it kind of felt like I was staying at Disneyland! Their property is very well kept. It was really lovely exploring the grounds, seeing the different displays they had set up, including a couple of nice panoramas of model railroads.
It was a very busy hotel, with 100% occupancy during most of the nights I was there. That being said, they accommodated the anticipated crowd fairly well at check-in, with no fewer than 5 front desk agents during daytime hours. There was a separate, dedicated elite check-in.
As platinum, I was upgraded into a Deluxe Suite which I was very happy with. It had a balcony with chairs overlooking the atrium (make sure to at least request a room with an atrium-view).
I received a choice of $10 F&B credit or bonus points. There is NO lounge or any other complimentary breakfast option that was provided. They have a couple of coffee shops on property that were fine for my personal needs.
There is a mandatory resort fee which is supposed to cover internet, 2 bottles of water daily, access to their onsite
water park (only open during summer months), their onsite
nightclub (which is only open on Fridays and Saturdays), and a couple of other small discounts.
The gym was pretty decent. It had the standard equipment but also had an extensive selection of dumbbells and barbells as well as a free-weight bench press, incline press, and squat rack, which you don't commonly find in most hotel gyms. There were no classes of any kind that I saw that were being offered.
Overall, I was pleased during my stay. It was quite enjoyable for me, personally, to explore and relax on the hotel grounds. However, just keep in mind that it will be a fair commute if you plan to spend a lot of time in Dallas proper.
