Doesn't have to actually be a VA plane nor is there a requirement to have purchased the ticket online. I do this all the time when flying to the US and travelling on VA flight numbers that are operated by DL.
Could I use my airnz no on the sector then change to virgin when in the lounge (to gain access to the loinge)?
