Funny thing is, you're both saying the same thing (if I'm reading correctly). Market demand for the better seats drives the price higher. Fewer need to be sold at a discounted price. United may not price a particular fare bucket higher, but they likely do keep track of sales and recognize they can sell more seats at a higher fare bucket on one flight than another, and do so.
Make sense? I might be totally misreading this though.
