My non-scientific calibration of a portable thermometer is to put it in an area with four or five other thermometers and if they are all roughly the same good to go!
The problem with these systems and even your home system can be that it isn't calibrated. My thermostat at home was off by 5 degrees when I did my non-scientific calibration. I had to go in and adjust it and now the ambient air in my home matches the varies thermometers in my home.
How many hotel systems are not calibrated? When you set it to 60 what are the chances you are actually getting down to 60? In my experience slim to none. They almost all seem to be off, by a lot.
On top of it, I have read up on some newer style systems and here is what I have found.
System A) A/C compressor doesn't come on if it isn't less than 70 outside. I hate these systems and will checkout ASAP. Last one I saw was in AZ.
System B) This hotel had an interesting system. If you set the AC down to say 66, four hours later it will change the temp to 68, four hours later 72 up until it reached 76. It worked in reverse for heat, down to 72. Basically the thermostat gave you a placebo experience as the display wouldn't show actual room temperature, only your fake set-point of 66. But I noticed it was getting hotter and running less and less. So every four hours I had to turn it off and back on, or at night just set it to 65 (lowest setting) and hope for the best.
We had a portable clock / thermometer which was reading 22C.
