Many years, when leaving DAY from my annual trip to Hamvention, I am offered VDB. This year was no exception. Because OAL were also all full or oversold, she offered 300 to start and got up to $500 for overnight stay and my return to LNK the next afternoon. I did this three years in a row once making my annual trip free, except for my first year's fare. Now, I am into my third year in a row again doing it. This is a convention of over 25,000 attendees, with many international travelers unwilling to give up their seats for their return legs home. Bonanza for me! I have never gotten less than $300 (got OAL return in F to OMA instead of LNK) and usually 400+ each year. Add to that the 75 I got for my 4-hour delay in ORD on my way there, and I have enough to maybe add another at least discounted trip.
