I suppose they could have put up an advisory the notify people that the site is under maintenance. As far as the window they did this, I guess it just depends how much they needed to do. I've seen plenty of tech companies take resources down well before midnight PDT, especially when they aren't based on the left coast. I know it can be hard for some over there to realize the world doesn't revolve around them.
