Most importantly because if you don't fly the outbound portion of a ticket, the return portion is automatically cancelled. Singapore Airlines tends to offer a low OW fare between JFK and FRA. Right now it can be purchased for less than $500 if you leave before the summer starts. Not sure how much it is after that. Turkish ailrines will sometimes have cheap OW tickets to Europe. But you have to connect in Istanbul. Air Berlin also has OW fares to/from Germany that are much less than the other carriers.
