Yours is even weirder. I gather there are only 2 MO serial numbers on the receipt?
The MOs are good as WM already got the money. Even WM did not immediately get its money on a real debit card, eventually it would.
Long long time ago at this same WM the machine suddenly stopped printing when I was using AS card. The transaction also was auto-closed and a refund was due - except, the register had just changed shift and did not have enough money in it. The CSM (same person as last night) told the cashier to "borrow" from the office but the lady who was responsible for daily cash reconciliation refused. Instead, said lady came out to fiddle the machine for like 30 min and finally made it to work again. At that point, she used the "cash" from the refund to "buy" 2 MOs and gave those to me - so I was made whole except had to waste 30 min waiting for her to fix the machine.
At another WM almost 18 months ago, the MoneyGram actually was down not printing but allowed transaction to go thru. The cashier did not know that until nothing was printed after totaling the transaction (once they total it, you cannot add any more purchase to it.) After calling the manager who did not even bother to show up, she was told to just give me Cash Refund as the money already taken from my AS card. So I was given almost $3K cash. They did not want to give me the transaction receipt but eventually agreed to give me a photocopy of it. It took almost 2 weeks before WM finally debited my bank account. Very similar thing happened to another FTer almost 2 years ago - it took almost 2 months before WM took the money from his bank account.
Basically last night there were 2 unrelated things happened to my 4 PP cards. 2 at WM had the weird reversal by WM register but the money was drained and could not be put back. WM does have a way to make you whole. I do not know how your cashier be able to reconcile her drawer at the end of her shift though.
The other 2 that failed at the first usage at grocery store did not have their PINs correctly attached to the cards even though I had set them and later re-set them. Not sure if there needed several hours lapse between resetting PIN, as once I set them again this morning, everything works normally.

When you mention this register auto-closing the transaction, and then they settled up with a 'cash transaction', I think something similar happened with me last week.
My events were something like this:
Go to buy my two MO's, tell cashier to do this in 4 swipes. This is one of the cashiers I've been dealing with for over 6 months, and she knows what she's doing...
So, 4 swipes done, and I'm hearing the printing machine, MO prints and she does her thing to enter the serial number and such for the receipt, then I hear that dreaded 'clrunk' sound -- you know the one where the register prints some one line message informing cashier that 'sometihing' bad is going on with the transaction (whether it be it requiring my DL to complete transaction, more than that, or simply about to reverse it all)...
At any rate, she starts mucking around with the machine, I don't really bother her by asking her questions since she looks a bit frustrated with it, and as I mentioned she knows what she's doins... and eventually after a few minutes, the MO's are eventually properly printed, serial number entered, and receipt has printed. So all's looking good.
However, I look at the receipt, and it's indicated I've given $2999.30. I only used 4 cards, so it should have been $2000. I only have just under $2K in MO's, so, looking closer at the receipt it says 4X$500 in debit transactions plus a $999.30 cash payment (which obviously I didn't do).
I only briefly asked her what's going on with this, and she kind of eluded to the register kind of bungling this, and that she had to make 'an adjustment' so my 2nd MO would print.
I kind of didn't think much more about it after I confirmed the MO was good, deposited to the bank, and it's been over a week now. Also checked the balances on the 4 cards used and they're $0. So, all in all I have gotten what I paid for, but, in some strange round about way.
I've obviously kept these 4 cards, their purchase receipts, the MO receipt and the WM receipt all together in a 'special' location in case I have to investigate this further (which would really only be if one of my MO's were returned unpaid).
At any rate, I'm not sure if your incident was like this, but, your most recent description of the issue seemed similar. I kind of chalked mine up to WM-error.
