I had a similar incident after a 9-½ h red-eye to AMS from the U.S. west coast a couple of years ago. Jet-lagged, I boarded the wrong train on the right platform; didn't look at the destination sign or check the time, just jumped on the first one. I figured out my mistake when the stop announcements came in the train after the doors closed. Got off at the next stop, ran to the other side, hopped on the next train back, ran up and down at AMS back to the same place on the same platform, and made my train with about 1 minute to spare. Then slept on the 2-hr journey and even managed to get off at the right stop!
